Available for self-catering holiday rentals all year round, Well Lane Cottage is located in the heart of Hugh Town on the island of St. Mary's, the largest of the Isles of Scilly. Oozing Scillonian history, the property gets its name from the adjacent early town well (long since capped off). Nestling in a quiet lane, Well Lane is close to all amenities and only a very short flat walk from the quay.

With a spacious front garden, this double-fronted cottage has been completely renovated and brought into the 21st century without losing any of its quaint charm. The cottage is comfortable and well-equipped, and being centrally heated it is ideal for early and late season holidays as well as summer breaks.

Hugh Town Harbour

The Scilly Isles are a group of over 50 islands lying only 28 miles south-west off the Cornish coast, however the islands enjoy a much milder climate than the mainland – sometimes it feels as though you have landed in the tropics, the sea and sky are so blue and the beaches so white.

Scilly has got to be one of the best places for ornithologists to visit, as not only are there many resident birds but also winter migrants and birds which have been blown off-course on their journey across the Atlantic. In spring, Scilly is a breeding site for puffins and there are special boat trips to view them.

Looking out to sea

I have visited Scilly in spring, summer, autumn and winter and there is no question the climate is so much warmer than on the mainland – when visiting in late October, we were still having picnics on the beach. Also, there are always flowers out in bloom; fragrant narcissi are even used to decorate the tiny island churches for Harvest Festival.

Whether you enjoy walking, sunbathing, snorkelling, exploring ancient sites, boating birdwatching or just relaxing, you are sure to have the most wonderful and memorable holiday on the Isles of Scilly – I have had so many holidays there and its magic draws me back year after year.
